Hanalei Bay, Kaua’i

As beautiful as some of Southern California’s beaches are, they are no match (not even you, Solana Beach) for the ease and beauty of the shores back home. Here at Hanalei Bay on Kaua’i’s North Shore, find a parking spot on the sand, the grass, the gravel so long as you aren’t blocking anyone in. Make like the kids and leap off the pier and into cerulean paradise. Admire the lush, green backdrop of surrounding mountains. Chances of spotting a waterfall or two: likely. Life was made for days like this.

The petite town of Hanapepe on the West side of Kaua’i actually features a number of nooks and corners. There’s Little Fish Cafe for coffee and acai bowls, the swinging bridge (our itty-bitty version of Capilano), a few boutiques and vintage goods shops and a few more eateries. I snapped this photo of my Mom snapping a photo of me post-acai bowls. Old plantation days vibes are alive and well in Hanapepe.

There, find the charming vintage trailer of Dark Roost coffee, where the brews are as smooth and inviting as the tradewinds Hawai’i is known and remembered for.
