Just your average Thursday in San Diego

It’s been feeling a lot like summer this week, and this photo of my Thursday lunch time surf session certainly captures the sun we’re so lucky to have so much of in San Diego. The water was unusually warm, thanks to El Nino. The sand beneath me stung a little from the heat. Random strands of seaweed tangoed with my board leash, a sea turtle peeked its head up at my 2 o’clock from the shimmering sea. It was a sublime Thursday afternoon.

Big Rock Trail, San Diego

Part of my preparation for my month-long trip to Europe next month includes making sure I’m in tip top shape. I’m not trekking the Camino de Santiago, as I mentioned in my last post but refusing a car rental (too cumbersome) for public transport and my own two feet inevitably mean hoofing it with everything I’ll need to work remotely, live decently and dress comfortably (and most of all cutely – duh) for the weeks I’ll be abroad.

To aid in some of that stamina building, some friends and I have our goals on Mission Trails Regional Park’s Five Peak Challenge, or #fivepeakchallenge on Insta.  To complete the challenge, summit to the top of the park’s five peaks, take a photo and force yourself to do some good foam rolling afterward. I added that last part only because the hurts so good part is worth it.

Pictured above is a view from the beginning of Big Rock Trail to the top of Cowles Mountain earlier this week, our first of five peaks. Hike two is scheduled for Tuesday; see you on the trail, or wish us luck!

Eggplant

The sound of the coffee machine sputtering in the morning takes me back to weekends from my childhood, when my parents would sit and chat in the dining room before my sister and I made our way to breakfast, their muffled voices and clinking spoons clearing the fog from my head.

The smell of carne asada transports me to late nights with friends in college, which is a habit that still persists today.

Don’t even get me started on the poetry of freshly steamed rice, smoky kalua pig and a tub of fresh ahi poke; I’ve shared many a mixed plate with local and visiting friends and family over the years as a youth on Kaua’i, and now as a returning visitor.

Five years ago, I was at a food conference in Santa Monica when I first had my taste of the eggplant and yogurt combo (and an introduction to cold brewed coffee). It was the first time I had yogurt outside of breakfast time, and as a main ingredient for a savory dish. I liked it a lot.

Food brings people together; its language is universal – so long as it’s good 😉

Jill (from Haaps & Barley and author of all of these Curious Palate recipes lately) shares a similar sentiment, and her recipe for an eggplant and yogurt recipe below. I’ll be making mine with Japanese eggplant, my variety of choice:
